  • 1 pkg. quick rise yeast
  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • ¾ tsp. salt
  • ¾ tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 2 eggs, divided
  • 2 Tbsp. butter, softened
  • 2-2½ cups flour, divided
  • 1 cup pre-cooked sausage crumbles
  • ½ cup mozzarella or cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Vegetable oil to grease bowl


In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, salt, Italian seasoning, 1 egg, butter, and 1 cup flour; beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Combine sausage and cheese in a medium bowl. Punch dough down. On a floured surface, roll into a 14 x 12-inch rectangle. Cut into 3 (14 x 4-inch) strips. Spoon ½ cup cheese mixture down the center of each strip. Bring the long edges together over filling and pinch to seal.

Coat baking sheet with cooking spray.

Place 3 strips with seam side down on baking sheet. Braid strips together and secure ends. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Whisk the remaining egg for glaze and brush over loaf of bread. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden. Turn baking sheet ½ turn after 15 minutes. Immediately remove from baking sheet to wire rack. Serve warm.
